Why Tailwheel
01
Industry-leading aviation safety experts agree: loss-of-control by pilot error is the number-one cause of accidents and incidents in light aircraft.

Simply put, tailwheel airplanes require the pilot to use their feet. In the air, they behave exactly like any other airplanes, but on the ground, they are negatively stable. They provide a unique challenge that makes better pilots in any kind of aircraft. We're proud that it's our business to share this discipline with new people.
02
Almost all historic airplanes, both military and civilian, are tailwheel airplanes. Critical preservation work on these aircraft requires that their pilots are capable with 'taildraggers.'
With a strong background in dozens of different kinds of tailwheel airplanes of all sizes, from the J-3 Cub to the DC-3, our instructors are well-equipped to help you acquire the skills necessary to become a vintage or 'warbird' pilot, keeping aviation history flying.
03
The popularity of backcountry flying is on the rise, with YouTube videos and social media sharing with millions the special joy and access that flying off the beaten path can provide.

"Bush planes" are almost all tailwheel, and our tailwheel courses all include training on short-field and unpaved field operations. We can also provide training on mountain flying techniques on request. With our training regimen, you'll find yourself well-prepared to conquer the great outdoors by air.
04
While Goodspeed Flying Service does not currently offer aerobatic instruction due to insurance limitations, almost all aerobatic airplanes are tailwheel, so if you're interested in pursuing this path, you'll need to learn to fly airplanes with the little wheel at the back.

Our Citabria is an excellent beginner's aerobatic airplane, so your experience in the type will transfer if you fly aerobatics in Citabrias or Decathlons down the road. Also, all of our tailwheel training includes substantial airwork, not just patterns, so that all students get the best feel possible for a new type.
